The Egbert's: Cooking as a Couple
“We buy food together, we cook together, and then we get to spend more time together”. Having spent the first 9 months of their relationship living in different places, Josh and Sarah Egbert like to spend time with each other as often as possible, and cherish the ability to do it now, knowing that life will only get more complicated.
Being able to spend time as a couple is the main draw, but the Egbert’s also like cooking together for a variety of other reasons. Josh stated that he’s always liked cooking, but said that, “It’s a lot easier to microwave chicken nuggets from a bag”, than to actually prepare food for one, and it often just doesn’t seem worth it to cook for one.
Sarah agrees adding that it’s more cost effective, “It's almost cheaper to eat real food for two, than when you’re both eating ramen”. This also allows the couple to eat, “a wider variety of tastier foods”. Although they do occasionally skip the work and go out to eat, “They don’t make a habit of it” because they feel like their options are more limited eating out on a budget, and that they can be healthier at home.
When it comes to dinner, they both feel that they work together effectively, Sarah at first boiling it down to, “Josh does it all, and I do the dishes”. She goes on to amend that saying that they both have more fun when they actually cook together, and make a more challenging meal. They agree that it helps them feel more like adults, whether it's creating their own paella recipe, or learning how to de-bone a chicken. It’s a part of life and personal growth that they get to share with each other. “When we cook together, working together to make something special, I absolutely love it”
